Short answer: To work in close protection (bodyguard) roles in Australia, you need a Certificate III in Close Protection Operations. You also need first aid. For armed roles, you need a Category H firearms certificate. Panoptic’s 9-day Close Protection Operatives Course gives you four recognised qualifications in one go, through Asset College (RTO 31718).
Close protection is also called Close Personal Protection (CPP). It is a licensed job. So you must train first. Here is what you earn.
What qualifications do you get?
You earn four when you pass every part:
- Certificate III in Close Protection Operations. This backs your bodyguard licence.
- Advanced First Aid. With trauma care (TCCC).
- Firearms Safety (Category H). For a firearms licence in any state.
- Panoptic CP Graduate Certificate. It shows you passed the full course.
Which one do you need for a licence?
The Certificate III is the key one. It is the base for a bodyguard licence. You apply for that licence in your own state. Armed roles also need the Category H certificate. Rules change a little by state. So check your local regulator.
Can you add a Certificate II?
Yes. You can add a Certificate II in Security Operations. It goes through Asset College. It is done by RPL. RPL means recognition of prior learning. It costs extra. And it is judged case by case. Ask the team if you want both.
Who issues the qualifications?
Panoptic runs the course. Asset College (RTO 31718) issues the recognised parts. Want the full plan? Read what happens during the 9-day CPP course. New to the field? Read how to become a CPP operative.
Where do qualified operatives work?

It also includes the Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong, Darwin, Katherine and Townsville. There is close protection, bodyguard and dignitary protection work near many defence bases and police hubs.
