Can I Get Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Towards Close Personal Protection (CPP) Qualifications?

Black-and-white infographic showing how Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is assessed by Asset College (RTO 31718) towards the optional Certificate II add-on for close protection students.

Short answer: Yes, up to a point. RPL can count your past skills towards some security qualifications. Our training partner, Asset College (RTO 31718), runs it. Each case is judged on its own. RPL does not skip the 9-day course. It mainly helps with the optional Certificate II add-on.

What is RPL, and how does it work here?

RPL is short for Recognition of Prior Learning. It gives you credit for skills you already have. You show what you have done before. An assessor checks it against the rules.

Panoptic is not an RTO. That means a Registered Training Organisation. All qualifications come through Asset College (RTO 31718). So Asset College runs RPL, not us.

Have you trained before, maybe as a police officer? Then ask about RPL. The best step is to contact the Training Manager. There is a set process. Each case is judged on its own.

Can RPL replace the Close Personal Protection (CPP) course?

No. RPL does not replace the 9-day live-in course. Everyone still does the full course on the Gold Coast. The course builds the team skills that close protection work needs. You cannot skip it with RPL.

RPL helps most with the Certificate II in Security Operations. This is an add-on. It costs extra. The course already covers part of it. RPL covers the rest. It looks at your CV and past work. Want both the Cert III and Cert II? Just ask. It is judged case by case.

What qualifications does the course give you?

You do not need RPL for the main qualifications. Graduates who pass all tests earn four:

  • Certificate III in Close Protection Operations — you need this for a bodyguard licence in Australia.
  • Advanced First Aid with trauma care (TCCC).
  • Firearms Safety, Category H — you need this for a firearms licence in any state.
  • The Panoptic CP Graduate Certificate.

These come through Asset College (RTO 31718). Want to see how the licence side fits? Read our guide on what qualifications you need for close protection work. Also read how to become a close protection operative in Australia.

Where do graduates work?

The course runs only on the Gold Coast. But graduates work right across Australia. Close protection operatives, often called bodyguards, work in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. They also work in other cities with a big defence base or police hub. The work covers corporate close protection, dignitary protection, event security and hostile-environment tasks. Your qualifications travel with you.
